Illustration of Ordsall Hall

A timber-framed Tudor manor with over 820 years of history, sitting improbably in the middle of modern Ordsall a mile from the city centre. Entry is free, which for a Grade I listed building of this quality still feels like an admin error. The Great Hall is the showpiece, with furnished Tudor rooms and collections beyond it, plus gardens to let off steam in.

It is a genuine two-hour visit rather than a full day, so it pairs well with Salford Quays down the road. There is a cafe and shop on site, and the school holidays bring craft workshops and hands-on activities pitched squarely at primary-age kids, with outdoor theatre in the gardens over summer. Sundays and Monday to Thursday only, so plan the day around that.

Know before you go

  • It opens Monday to Thursday and Sundays - do not turn up on a Friday or Saturday.
  • Time a visit for the school holidays, when the hall runs hands-on activities and craft workshops for kids.

War told through people's stories in a building designed to feel like a shattered globe. The hourly Big Picture Show projections fill the whole gallery and stop everyone mid-step. Heavy themes, handled well - better for the top end of primary.

One of the biggest garden projects in Europe, and more fun for kids than a flower garden has any right to be: a huge walled kitchen garden, lake walks, and space to run that feels endless.

Free, small and genuinely good: Lark Hill Place, a full Victorian street rebuilt indoors, is the bit the kids will remember. Peel Park is right outside for the run-around afterwards.
