The Lowry's galleries are free and hold the world's largest LS Lowry collection, with a free immersive 360 room that is a better hook for children than starting with paintings on a wall. Imperial War Museum North sits across the water, also free, its hourly Big Picture Show projections filling the whole gallery - heavy themes handled well, best from about seven up. Between them, that is a full wet day without buying a ticket.
Away from the Quays it stays cheap. Ordsall Hall is a free Tudor manor marooned among the new-builds, closed Fridays and Saturdays, which catches people out. Salford Museum's Lark Hill Place is a recreated Victorian street children walk down rather than peer at. The paid exception is RHS Garden Bridgewater, one of the biggest garden projects in Europe, with a huge walled kitchen garden and running space that feels endless. Days out in Salford with kids are mostly free, and nobody seems to have noticed yet.
