Liverpool's great Victorian park: 235 acres around a glass Palm House full of palms and statues, with the fairy glen's waterfalls and stepping stones as the children's favourite corner.
The Palm House runs free family events most school holidays - the diary is worth a check before you go. Free, all of it, which for something this grand still surprises.

South Liverpool's favourite park: lake, playground, ancient trees and the Storybarn, The Reader's hands-on storytelling space in the old coach house. The neolithic Calder Stones are older than Stonehenge, which is a good fact to deploy.
