Playgrounds, country parks, woodland trails and nature reserves. Most of these cost nothing.
South Liverpool holds the good ones and they are all free. Sefton Park is the grand Victorian statement, 235 acres of lake, streams and playgrounds with the Palm House glasshouse at the middle of it. Calderstones is the local favourite, smaller and easier, with a lake, ancient trees and the Storybarn for younger children.
Speke Hall is the day out rather than the afternoon: a Tudor hall with a maze, woodland walks and a natural play area, National Trust and priced accordingly unless you are members. If you have a morning and no money, Sefton Park is the answer nearly every time.
South Liverpool's favourite park: lake, playground, ancient trees and the Storybarn, The Reader's hands-on storytelling space in the old coach house. The neolithic Calder Stones are older than Stonehenge, which is a good fact to deploy.
Two minutes off junction 5 of the M62, and you cannot hear it once you are past the trees. A Green Flag park with a playground, sunken gardens, a community orchard and free parking on site.
A Green Flag park on the wedge of land left behind by three converging railway lines: playground, cafe, bird hide and the Trans Pennine Trail straight through. Halewood station is next door, so you can arrive by train.
Liverpool's great Victorian park: 235 acres of lake, streams and playgrounds around a glass Palm House full of palms, statues and free family events. The fairy glen with its waterfalls is the bit children remember.
A Tudor hall with woodland walks, a maze and a natural play area in the grounds. Free if you have National Trust membership, and the indoor house is a good rain fallback.
The reliable default: gardens, a children's zoo, a big playground and plenty of room to run. Pay for parking, nothing else.
A peat bog nature reserve with woodland trails, a visitor centre and an observation tower the kids can climb. Free, close and short enough for little legs.
St Helens' biggest park. Play areas, open space and a walled garden, and it costs nothing.
A 20-metre white head rising out of a reclaimed colliery, with woodland trails around it. Genuinely strange and memorable for kids, and a short walk rather than a hike.
A green corridor of canal towpath and parkland running from St Helens down towards Warrington. Flat, traffic-free and ideal if the bikes or scooters are coming.
Cheshire's biggest forest, set up properly for families: the Gruffalo sculptures still stand along the trail, 2026's new Room on the Broom activity trail runs from the visitor centre, and the whole loop is pram-friendly. Go Ape overhead for older kids.
