Macclesfield, Cheshire
Macclesfield was once the world's largest producer of finished silk, with 5,000 looms in 71 mills, and the Silk Museum on Park Lane tells that story for nothing: fabric designs, pattern books, vintage fashion, the town's Second World War work and, oddly, a link to Ancient Egypt. There is a cafe with cake, a shop, and a garden.
The better bit for children is Paradise Mill, the town's last surviving silk mill, which holds the largest collection of Jacquard handlooms still in their original setting, and sometimes a resident weaver at work. Afternoon entry slots are £4.50 for a child and £7.50 for an adult, and children get an activity trail in which they are a Victorian child millworker. The morning guided tours are £14.50 an adult and better suited to older children.
There is regular family activity: Museum Tots on Thursday mornings, free drop-in crafts in October half term, and Father Christmas in the machine gallery on three Saturdays in November and December. Autumn 2026 also has a Bayeux Tapestry tie-in, Macclesfield and The Bayeux, running to 19 December.
What it costs: Silk Museum admission is free. Paradise Mill admission (timeslots Wednesday to Saturday at 2pm, 2.30, 3 and 3.30): adult £7.50, concession £6.50, child £4.50. Guided mill tours Wednesday to Saturday at 11am and 12.15pm: adult £14.50, concession £12.50. Meet Father Christmas (Saturdays 21 November, 5 and 12 December 2026): £10 per child, £8.50 for additional children.
Half-term drop-in where families design a coat of arms with their own colours, symbols and motto and make an illuminated initial in the style of medieval manuscripts. All materials provided; the museum says it suits all ages but is best for 5 to 12. Part of the museum's Bayeux Tapestry season.
The museum's Machine Gallery turns into a winter grotto for three Saturdays. Children meet Father Christmas, play with traditional Victorian toys, try on historical dressing-up costumes and take home a memento.

A gritstone hill above Macclesfield with old quarry machinery to clamber round, a summit view across the whole Cheshire Plain and a good coffee shop at the bottom. Free apart from the pay and display car park.
One of Britain's oldest public parks, opened in 1854 and part-paid for by Macclesfield's own workers: playground, toddler area, skatepark, gardens and a daily cafe. The little museum on the park edge is currently closed.
Conifer forest and four reservoirs in the hills east of Macclesfield, with miles of forestry track between them. Herons nest at Trentabank and are visible from the path, so there is something to point at when the legs go.
Macclesfield's big soft play on the Hurdsfield estate: a three-level frame with a 10 metre wave slide, a separate toddler frame, a sports pitch and a trampoline zone called Boost. The website's price list is old, so check when you book.
Bowling, Laser Quest and the Crazy Club soft play under one roof on the London Road, on the southern edge of Macclesfield. The early-morning and after-school bowling deals are properly cheap.
