Southport's beach is the northern end of Sefton's 22 miles of coast, where the sand meets the Ribble estuary and wading birds feed on the flats. It is a walk from Southport station and sits right behind the Marine Lake strip, so it slots into a day with the miniature railway, the adventure golf and Splash World rather than being the whole day. On a still day with a spade it is a very large, very flat sandpit.

Set expectations: the historic pier has been shut since December 2022 and stays shut until its decking and steelwork are repaired, and the on-beach car park is closed because the sand is in poor condition. Park on Marine Drive, which fills on sunny days, or at the Esplanade pay and display. Barbecues are banned anywhere on the Sefton coast, and from 1 May to 30 September dogs are kept off the stretch from the pier south towards Pleasureland.

What it costs: The beach is free. The on-beach car park is closed because of poor sand; use the Marine Drive car park or the pay and display at the Esplanade.

Know before you go

RNLI lifeguards cover the beach in summer only (in 2026 they finished on 7 September). Outside that, nobody is watching the water.
Southport Pier has been closed since December 2022 for safety repairs. Do not promise anyone a walk to the end of it.
The Marine Drive car park fills on sunny days; the large Esplanade pay and display is the fallback.
