The Wizarding Adventure on the East Lancashire Railway

A half-term wizard school on a train: spells, wand work, broomsticks and a dragon egg to look after, with costumed professors and their creature friends. The railway says five to twelve year olds get the most from it.

An hour-long round trip from Bury on the 'Scream Train', with a jump-scare walkthrough on the footbridge first and costumed monsters on board. Fancy dress encouraged; probably one for the braver end of primary school.

Santa Specials on the East Lancashire Railway

28 to 29 November, 5 to 6 and 12 to 13 December, then daily 19 to 24 December

A walk through Bury Bolton Street dressed as a winter wonderland, then an 80-minute steam round trip to Rawtenstall with a brass band, a gift for every child and Santa coming down the carriage. The late November weekend is the cheapest by some distance, and parking in Bury is tight, so the Santa Shuttle from Heywood is worth a look.
