Bring change for Astbury Mere, a flooded sand quarry ten minutes' walk from the town centre with a flat mile-long path round the water. Parking there is 60p to £1.50 and at Brereton Heath it is £1.80 to £4.30, which buys you fifty odd acres of birch and oak wrapped round a lake plus a permanent orienteering course, the best trick on this page for a child who has decided walking is boring.
Congleton Park charges nothing at all, paddling pool included, and has a play area rebuilt for £100,000 and a cafe open 9am to 4pm every day.

Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve
Fifty odd acres of birch and oak wrapped round a fifteen acre lake, out between Congleton and Holmes Chapel. Give the children the permanent orienteering map and it stops being a walk.
Congleton Park
The free outdoor paddling pool is the summer draw, run for under elevens with an attendant always on duty. The rest is twenty five acres of Victorian park along the River Dane.

The reliable default: gardens, a children's zoo, a big playground and plenty of room to run. Pay for parking, nothing else.
Risley Moss
A peat bog nature reserve with woodland trails, a visitor centre and an observation tower the kids can climb. Free, close and short enough for little legs.
Sherdley Park
St Helens' biggest park. Play areas, open space and a walled garden, and it costs nothing.
Dream, Sutton Manor
A 20-metre white head rising out of a reclaimed colliery, with woodland trails around it. Genuinely strange and memorable for kids, and a short walk rather than a hike.
Sankey Valley Park
A green corridor of canal towpath and parkland running from St Helens down towards Warrington. Flat, traffic-free and ideal if the bikes or scooters are coming.
Speke Hall
A Tudor hall with woodland walks, a maze and a natural play area in the grounds. Free if you have National Trust membership, and the indoor house is a good rain fallback.
