Money lives in Wilmslow, but the best of it for children is free. The Carrs runs along the River Bollin straight out of the town centre: flat riverside paths, stepping stones, open grass for any picnic, and kingfishers for the patient. Keep walking downstream and the woods eventually deliver you to Styal and Quarry Bank Mill, which is the day out proper.

Quarry Bank is one of the National Trust's best days for this age group, a working cotton mill where the looms still clatter and the Apprentice House tells the story of the children who worked them. It needs most of a day, so do not tack it onto something else. Tatton's deer are fifteen minutes away at Knutsford, Alderley Edge's woods and wizard legend ten minutes south. For a commuter town, the walking is remarkable.
