Fleetwood Museum

Fleetwood grew up on fishing, and this museum in a listed terrace on the seafront tells that story: the trawlers, the crews, the town Decimus Burton laid out to be somewhere. Adults pay £4 and accompanied children are free, which for a family of four makes it one of the cheaper indoor hours on the Fylde coast. There are craft activities and school-holiday events alongside the galleries.
Be realistic about scale. It is a volunteer-friendly local museum, not a Science and Industry Museum, and an hour or so covers it for most primary-age children, longer if the craft table is out or you settle into Sir Peter's Coffee House for the locally made cakes and Lancashire crumpets. Some upper areas of the old building are hard going for wheels; ring ahead if access matters.
The second-hand bookshop next door is dangerous for parents, and the shop stubbornly still sells proper games rather than plastic tat.
Know before you go
- Check the day before you drive an hour: it shuts Sundays and Mondays outside bank holidays, and closes completely from the end of October to late March.
- The heritage tram runs along the front in season, and museum, tram, beach and chip shop is the correct Fleetwood order of operations.
Worth knowing: Best for school-age children with a bit of patience for looking at things.
