A proper hands-on farm park at the top of the Fylde coast: feeding, petting, pony and tractor rides, and enough indoor barns to survive the weather. Flat £10 a head from age 1, which is the only catch.
Rossall Point Observation Tower
Fleetwood, Lancashire
Rossall Point Tower is a 42 foot tower on the promenade between Cleveleys and Fleetwood, built to look as if it is leaning into the wind. Wyre's volunteer rangers open it at weekends, and inside there is a display on the coast's wildlife and a collection of things found on the beach. The National Coastwatch team keep watch from the second floor.
There are two viewing decks with binoculars, and on a clear day you can see across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland fells and out over the Irish Sea. A rooftop camera you control from the ground floor means nobody gets left at the bottom of the stairs.
Rossall Point car park and play area are next to it, so a wild beach walk, a climb up the tower and a go on the swings is a free afternoon. Opening is Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 4pm.
What it costs: Free. The tower opens to the public at weekends only.
Know before you go
- It is open Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm only, and can close at short notice for weather or volunteer numbers. The noticeboard at the promenade entrance has the day's hours.
- Can't face the stairs? There is a rooftop camera you can steer from the ground floor.

Fleetwood Museum
Fleetwood's maritime museum on Queen's Terrace: the town's fishing story told for £4, with accompanied children free and Lancashire crumpets in the coffee house. Small and seasonal, so treat it as the indoor hour of a Fleetwood day, not the day itself.
Wyre Estuary Country Park
Free parking, a cafe, two natural play areas and miles of riverbank on the Wyre estuary. The no-cost, no-planning option on the Fylde coast when the seafront is too much.
Marine Gardens, Fleetwood
The name undersells it. Fleetwood's seafront gardens hold a large playground with inclusive equipment, a skate bowl, a model boating lake the yacht club races on, bowling greens and pitch and putt. The beach is across the road.
Memorial Park, Fleetwood
A Green Flag park in the middle of Fleetwood with children's play areas, a duck pond, woodland and a multi use games court that is genuinely free to use. Parkour bars too, though those are for over eights.
