Nelson's leisure pool under a pyramid roof, with a wave machine, a 130ft twisting slide and a new waterplay beach for little ones. A junior swim is £4.20 and a family of four £20.50, which is cheap for a wave pool.

Giddy Kippers is a party and play centre on the Lomeshaye estate in Nelson, and it has been at it long enough to have three themed party rooms. The main play zone is a three-storey frame with a climbing wall, slides and monkey bars, for children up to 11. Under-3s get their own smaller version with a ball pool, a mini slide and a climbing net, and there is a fully enclosed sports zone for football.
The prices are fair. A child is £6 on weekdays and £7 at weekends and in the holidays, and adults pay £1, or £2 at busy times. The best deal is Toddler Time on term-time weekdays between 10am and 2pm: £6 for one adult and one child, with a hot drink and a juice thrown in. A weekday meal deal of entry, a kids' meal and a drink is £9.
Kipper's Cafe does the food, and there are three themed party rooms if you are scouting for a birthday. The main frame is for children up to 11 and under 148cm, and the toddler area is only for under-4s under 1m tall, so big siblings cannot crash the baby zone. Socks are compulsory. Tickets are sold through the online booking site, so book rather than chance the door on a wet Saturday.
What it costs: Children 1 to 11: £6, or £7 at weekends and in school holidays. Adults (12+): £1, or £2 at weekends and in holidays. Babies 6 to 11 months £2. Toddler Time (one adult and one child, with tea or coffee and juice) £6, term-time weekdays 10am to 2pm. Weekday term-time meal deal (entry, kids' meal and drink) £9.
Worth knowing: Main frame for children up to 11.
