Illustration of Wycoller Country Park

Wycoller is one of Lancashire County Council's country parks, a mix of woodland and farmland around a small hamlet in the hills above Trawden. The Bronte sisters knew the area, and nearby landmarks turn up in Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, which is the line on the leaflet. For children the attraction is simpler: footpaths, a beck to follow and room to roam. There are toilets and a picnic area.

Parking is £1 a day at either of the two pay-and-display car parks, on Trawden Road and Howarth Road, by card or phone. Cars stop there to keep the village clear, so everyone walks in. Paths lead out to local spots including Bank House and Wycoller Beck. For a longer day, the nature walk from Ball Grove Park in Colne runs up the valley to here.

What it costs: Free to visit. Two pay-and-display car parks, £1 a day, paid by card or phone.

Know before you go

  • Cars are not allowed beyond the two car parks (Trawden Road and Howarth Road) unless driven by a registered disabled person, so be ready for a walk into the village.
  • Payment is by card or phone only. Mobile signal in a moorland valley is not guaranteed, so bring a card.
