Climbing towers, jumping pillows, go-karts and an indoor barn beside the Mersey promenade - the venue Liverpool parents keep naming when asked what actually works.

Book holiday sessions ahead. The promenade outside is the cooldown: flat, wide and pointed at the water.

What it costs: Child £9 off peak, £19 at peak times. Adult £4.50 off peak, £9.50 peak. Peak covers weekends, school holidays, bank holidays and event days. Park open 10am to 6pm in summer and 10am to 5pm in winter, with last entry 45 minutes before close.

Know before you go

Peak pricing covers weekends, school holidays and event days, which is most of when you would go. An off-peak weekday in term time is half the price.
The go-karts and the bouncing pillows are the draw for the 6-and-ups; the indoor barn is what saves the visit when it rains off the Mersey.

Otterspool's Christmas ticket, all in one booking: the Elf Workshop where children make a teddy, gingerbread with Mother Christmas, an elf village with an ice rink and marshmallows, and time with Father Christmas. Prices change by date, and weekend slots go first. Gentler SENsational sessions run on 29 November and 20 and 21 December, and there is a payment plan with the last instalment on 1 November.

Merseyside Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum next door are shut for essential maintenance ahead of a major redevelopment that National Museums Liverpool says is subject to funding, and no reopening date is published. The Albert Dock around them is still worth the walk, and the city's other national museums are free and open.

Mersey Ferries River Explorer
