Pickerings Pasture
Widnes, Cheshire
Salt marsh until the 1950s. Then a tip for thirty years, household and industrial waste piled up on the edge of the Mersey, until Halton reclaimed the lot in the 1980s. It opened to the public in 1986 and became a local nature reserve in 1991, and it was the first site in the borough to take a Green Flag.
Knowing that makes the walk more interesting, because what is there now is wildflower meadow, scrub and a wide surfaced path along the water with the Runcorn bridges off to your left.
For small children the appeal is simple. Flat paths that take a pushchair or a scooter, a lot of open space, benches and picnic tables, and enough birds on the mudflats to keep a pair of cheap binoculars busy. It links straight onto the Trans Pennine Trail if you want to keep walking. The estuary views are genuinely wide, the sort of sky you do not get in a town park.
The cafe is new. Halton opened a waterfront building here in 2026, run by Esposito's, who also do the cafes at Victoria Park and Runcorn Hill, and it does Italian coffee, sandwiches, cakes and gelato. Before that your options were a flask or nothing. The car park is free and small, the toilets are unreliable, and the gates are locked in the evening.
Know before you go
- The car park is small and free, a combination that fills it by eleven on a sunny Sunday. Go early or go late afternoon.
- Toilets have a reputation for being shut even when the building looks open, so sort that in Widnes and do not rely on it here.
- The gates get locked in the evening. Read the sign on the way in if you are staying for the sunset over the estuary, because it is a good one and you do not want to be walking back to a locked car.
