Nobody plans a holiday around Widnes, but the day it offers is a tidy one. Catalyst Science Centre is small, cheap and hands-on, with a glass rooftop observatory looking out over the Mersey, and Victoria Park sits minutes away with big playgrounds, a bandstand cafe and a splash pad in summer. Science in the morning, park in the afternoon, home by teatime, and neither half hurts the budget.

Once you have done that twice, look outwards, because Widnes is well placed for it. Norton Priory is just over the bridge in Runcorn, cheap and quietly excellent, with a medieval undercroft and a giant St Christopher. St Helens and its free parks are fifteen minutes north, Warrington's soft play surplus a similar hop east. A day out in Widnes with kids is honestly a half-day, and the great steel arch of the bridge is the bit they will point at anyway.
