A big council leisure centre on the edge of Lancaster that quietly covers three rainy-day bases at once. Energy is the soft play, with dedicated toddler and baby sections and a 148cm height limit at the top end. XHeight is the climbing: 18 themed challenge walls in the Clip 'n Climb mould, from age five up, run as 50-minute instructed sessions.
Prices are the council kind. Soft play is £6 a child and under 1s are free, and on term-time Fridays from 3pm there is a deal of child entry plus a kids' meal for £8. Climbing is £8 for juniors and must be pre-booked. The pool has a moveable floor, a spa pool and a waterslide, plus floats-and-inflatables sessions on the timetable. Outside food is banned in soft play but the Refuel cafe is on site.
It will not win style awards, but soft play, climbing and a swim in one building, with free parking, is a hard combination to argue with at these prices.
What it costs: Energy soft play £6 per child, under 1s free. Energy Zappers sessions for 0 to 4s are £4. XHeight climbing £8 for 5 to 17s, £10 adults, in 50-minute sessions.
Know before you go
- On weekends and in school holidays soft play runs as pre-booked sessions, so book before you drive over. Term-time weekdays you can just walk in.
- The whole centre closes on bank holidays, which is exactly when you would think of going. Plan around it.
Worth knowing: XHeight climbing is 5+; soft play takes children up to 148cm.

Crook O' Lune Picnic Site
Turner painted this view, which is worth nothing to a seven year old but does explain the crowds. A picnic site on the horseshoe bend of the Lune with tables, toilets and easy riverside walking.
Giggles Play and Adventure
Adults go in free and you only pay for the children who actually play. Giggles takes birth to ten in Lancaster Leisure Park, with the frames split by size so the crawlers are not flattened.
Ryelands Park
Forty-six acres north of the Lune with an accessible play area for under twelves, outdoor gym kit and five football pitches. Free parking, and a free junior parkrun every Sunday morning.
The Little Cobbled Village
A pretend village for under 8s on the Lune Business Park: fire station, vets, supermarket, ice cream parlour and seven more wooden play shops. Booked sessions, calm by design, and very little climbing.
Judges' Lodgings Museum
A 17th-century townhouse below the castle with a Museum of Childhood on the top floor: 200 years of toys, a Victorian schoolroom and nurseries. Free for children, adults £5, and open Thursday to Sunday until mid November.
