The Ashton Memorial - the huge green-domed folly you see from the M6 - crowns Lancaster's hilltop park, with a butterfly house, mini beasts and mini zoo below it and Morecambe Bay spread out beyond.
The park is free; the butterfly house charges a little and earns it. Fifty pence-sized legs will feel the hill - the memorial steps are the workout portion of the day.
The butterfly house has reopened, and The Dukes theatre runs its annual outdoor promenade show through the park each summer, Robin Hood in 2026, with audiences walking the grounds between scenes as the light goes. The promenade play is a Lancaster institution and sells out; the butterfly house is back to being the rainy-day excuse.
The Ashton Memorial remains the North West's most extravagant folly, visible from half of Lancashire and worth the climb for the view over Morecambe Bay alone. With the playground, the mini zoo animals and 54 acres of paths, it is Lancaster's full free afternoon, parking aside.

Lancaster's council leisure centre doing triple duty: Energy soft play, XHeight climbing walls and a 33m pool with a waterslide and inflatable sessions. Cheaper than the private soft play chains, and everything is under one roof for a wet day.
