A 2km woodland loop round a Victorian dam on the edge of Lymm village: flat enough for a pushchair in dry weather, with a coffee van at the top and ducks all the way round. The classic short local walk, done properly.

Walton Hall is the default and has been for a century: free gardens, a free children's zoo, a big playground, and parking the only cost. When the answer needs to be quick and cheap, it is that.
The others are more specific. Lymm Dam is a 2km woodland loop round a Victorian dam, flat and free, with free parking, and it is the one to do with a scooter. Risley Moss is a peat bog with an observation tower and a visitor centre, better for a child who likes looking at things than one who needs to climb them.

The reliable default: gardens, a children's zoo, a big playground and plenty of room to run. Pay for parking, nothing else.

St Helens' biggest park. Play areas, open space and a walled garden, and it costs nothing.
Dream, Sutton Manor
A 20-metre white head rising out of a reclaimed colliery, with woodland trails around it. Genuinely strange and memorable for kids, and a short walk rather than a hike.
Sankey Valley Park
A green corridor of canal towpath and parkland running from St Helens down towards Warrington. Flat, traffic-free and ideal if the bikes or scooters are coming.
Speke Hall
A Tudor hall with woodland walks, a maze and a natural play area in the grounds. Free if you have National Trust membership, and the indoor house is a good rain fallback.
Delamere Forest
Cheshire's biggest forest, set up properly for families: the Gruffalo sculptures still stand along the trail, 2026's new Room on the Broom activity trail runs from the visitor centre, and the whole loop is pram-friendly. Go Ape overhead for older kids.
Pennington Flash
A big lake with easy flat paths, bird hides and a decent play area. Free, close, and a good one for scooters and a picnic.
