Crewe's showpiece, opened in 1887 and still recognisably a Victorian park: 45 acres with a 4.5 acre ornamental lake at the middle, formal flowerbeds, mature trees and waterfowl who consider your sandwiches communal property. The playground has kit for younger and older children, including a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, and the lakeside pavilion holds the cafe and the toilets.
Everything is free except what you eat. The Taste for Life cafe in the pavilion runs 9am to 5pm every day, doing breakfasts, kids' meals and ice cream, and the baby change is in the same building. Parking is at Tip Kinder Park on Queens Park Drive, a short walk from the gates.
One caution: boat hire on the lake has come and gone with changes of operator over the years, so do not promise pedalos on the drive over. A lap of the lake, the playground and an ice cream is the formula that never fails here.
Know before you go
- Park at Tip Kinder Park on Queens Park Drive - there is no parking inside the park itself.
- Gates open at 8am but closing time moves with the seasons, 4.30pm in midwinter and 8.30pm in high summer, so check before an evening visit.
