A railway yard museum next to Crewe station, on the site of the old works that built over 7,000 locomotives. The star is the APT-P, the tilting train that held the UK rail speed record for decades, alongside the 8000th locomotive built at Crewe. Miniature railway rides, model layouts, a Crewe at War exhibition and a kids activity area fill out the visit.
It only opens at weekends and on bank holidays in season, 10am to 4.30pm, and the 2026 season ends on 1 November, so check before setting off. Tickets are on the door only. Children go free all season in 2026, which changes the sums for a family, and the miniature railway usually has a different engine running each week. Cafe and picnic grounds on site.
One honest caveat: the North Junction signal box, the big landmark tower, is currently closed to visitors, so temper any promises about pulling levers.
What it costs: Children free for the 2026 season from 1 April, a saving of £6 per child on 2025. Adult admission is paid on arrival, no advance booking. Entry is free for everyone on Wednesdays in the Cheshire East school holidays.
Crewe Heritage Centre has Halloween fun on its half-term open days, 24 October to 1 November, 10am to 4.30pm. Wednesday 28 October is a free admission day. The 31 October weekend closes the season.

Crewe's grand Victorian park: a big ornamental lake, formal flowerbeds, a lakeside cafe and a playground that covers toddlers to ten-year-olds. Free, and better kept than most parks twice as famous.
A family-run play centre in Crewe since 1997, built round a six-storey play frame that the owners reckon is one of the tallest in Europe. Fixed sessions, fair prices, and a separate baby and toddler time in term.
Twenty-five lanes on the Phoenix Leisure Park, with laser tag, escape rooms, an arcade and a small soft play alongside. Go on a Tuesday, when bowling is half price.
The soft play formerly known as GTC, in a converted warehouse near Crewe town centre, with its own car park, open-ended stay and play in term time and £1 adult entry. Closed on term-time Tuesdays.
