Queens Park, Crewe
Crewe's grand Victorian park: a big ornamental lake, formal flowerbeds, a lakeside cafe and a playground that covers toddlers to ten-year-olds. Free, and better kept than most parks twice as famous.

A railway yard museum next to Crewe station, on the site of the old works that built over 7,000 locomotives. The star is the APT-P, the tilting train that held the UK rail speed record for decades, alongside the 8000th locomotive built at Crewe. Miniature railway rides, model layouts, a Crewe at War exhibition and a kids activity area fill out the visit.
It only opens weekends and bank holidays from April to November, 10am to 4.30pm, so check before setting off. Tickets are on the door only. Children go free all season in 2026, which changes the sums for a family, and the miniature railway usually has a different engine running each week. Cafe and picnic grounds on site.
One honest caveat: the North Junction signal box, the big landmark tower, is currently closed to visitors, so temper any promises about pulling levers.
Know before you go
- Open Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, 10am to 4.30pm with last entry 3.30pm - plus Wednesdays in Cheshire East school holidays, when entry is free for everyone.
- Trainspotting is part of the deal: the viewing platform sits over the West Coast Main Line, so Pendolinos hammer past the museum all day.
Seasonal: Apr-Nov, weekends and bank holidays. Check before travelling.
