Queens Park, Crewe
Crewe's grand Victorian park: a big ornamental lake, formal flowerbeds, a lakeside cafe and a playground that covers toddlers to ten-year-olds. Free, and better kept than most parks twice as famous.

Playworld is an independent, family-run soft play on Newcastle Road in Shavington, a couple of miles south of Crewe. The frame is themed as a world tour: dinosaurs in the land that time forgot, space blasters, a match at Wembley, Big Ben, the Great Wall of China with its terracotta army, skiing the Alps and the Giant's Causeway. Toddlers have an under-the-sea zone with an octopus, and babies get a Central Park corner and a sensory area.
How you visit depends on the calendar. On term-time weekdays it is drop-in from 10am to 5.30pm with no booking. Weekends, school holidays and inset days switch to booked two hour sessions, 10 to 12, 12.30 to 2.30 and 3 to 5, with a clean in between, and the sensory area is closed. The prices only show inside the booking system after you pick a date, which is annoying, so we cannot quote them here.
The kitchen cooks food fresh on site, and there are sofas for the adults. There is also a Build a Bear table, which is handy for a present and less handy for your wallet if your child spots it first. Parties are a big part of the business, from £14.50 a child for the after-school version. For a plain play visit, pick a term-time weekday if you can: no booking, no fixed slot, and the sensory area is open.
What it costs: Play session prices are not shown on the website or before you pick a date in the booking system. Online bookings carry a £1.50 booking fee.
