Blackpool's counterweight: 390 acres of Italian gardens, boating lake, bandstand and one of the coast's best playgrounds, all free, five minutes from the Tower crowds.
The art deco cafe does a proper breakfast, the lake does rowing boats and swan pedalos, and the whole thing reminds you Blackpool was built with real Victorian money.
The park turned 100 this year and was just named one of the five best urban green spaces in the country, which locals have treated as official confirmation of something they already knew. The 260 acres take in the Italian gardens, the art deco cafe, the boating lake and a playground that holds its own against anything on the coast.
Summer adds the extras: rowing boats and swan pedalos on the lake, crazy golf, and Blackpool Zoo sharing the park's eastern edge, so the free morning and the paid afternoon join up without moving the car. It is the half of Blackpool the Promenade crowd never sees, and the better half in a heatwave.
