Blackpool, Lancashire

Every autumn Blackpool strings six miles of lights, tableaux and interactive pieces along the Promenade from Starr Gate to Red Bank Road, and it costs nothing to see. The 2026 run goes from 4 September to 3 January, so it covers October half term, Christmas and everything in between.
You will not walk all six miles with children and should not try. Pick a stretch around the Tower, walk it, then ride an illuminated heritage tram through the rest; the tram is the bit kids remember. Driving through works too, but the queues on switch-on weekend and October weekends are famous for the wrong reasons.
The season folds in Lightpool Festival in the autumn and Christmas By The Sea later on, both free, so a lights trip can piggyback on either. Ride The Lights, the night the Promenade closes to cars and bikes get the run of it, falls on 1 September in 2026, just before the proper switch-on.
Seasonal: Sept to Jan. Check before travelling.

The Tower Eye's glass floor 380 feet up, a proper circus that still knows how to play to kids, and the famous ballroom below for a fancy ice cream. Buy the attractions you want rather than the bundle you will not use.

The UK's biggest indoor waterpark, kept at tropical temperature: proper toddler pools and mini slides at one end, big flumes at the other. Rainy-day Blackpool solved.

Elephants, gorillas, giraffes and sea lions in 37 acres that are actually walkable with primary-age legs - big enough to feel like a full day, small enough that nobody ends up carried.

A solid seafront aquarium with an ocean tunnel and rockpool sessions - the reliable wet-weather hour when the beach plan falls apart.

Blackpool's grand free option: Italian gardens, a big boating lake, one of the best playgrounds on the coast and model boats on the lake. The antidote to a wristband day.
