Santa costs anything from under £10 to well over £200 for a family of four in the North West this year, and the difference is not always the size of the present. So this guide sorts the grottos by what two adults and two children actually pay, using the prices each venue had published on 25 September 2026.
Three honest caveats. Prices here are the standard ones; early bird deals come and go and are left out. Several good grottos had dates but no prices yet, and they have their own list further down rather than a guess. And the popular ones do sell out, some before November, so if one here is the one, book it now.
The Silk Museum in Macclesfield turns its Machine Gallery into a grotto on three Saturdays, 21 November, 5 December and 12 December. It is £10 for the first child and £8.50 for each extra one, and there are Victorian toys and dressing up while you wait.
The Lancashire Mining Museum at Astley runs a Santa Special on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December: a ride on its little railway, then Santa in the replica miner's cottage and a small gift, from £4.40. The carriages are open, so dress for December. Volunteer-run, small, and the cheapest Santa I found.
Quarry Bank at Styal does a private family visit with Father Christmas, a photo and a gift for each child on selected dates from 5 to 23 December, at £12 a child with up to two adults free. That is £24 for four.
Levens Hall near Kendal opens for Christmas on Fridays to Sundays from 4 to 20 December, with the fires lit and choirs in the Great Hall. Father Christmas is in the Old Nursery at weekends, booked, one child per slot, so it is a proper conversation. Christmas admission is £9.50 an adult and £3 a child with under 5s free, so £25 for four, less if yours are small.
Walton Hall in Warrington: £32 for four. Santa, a present and a puzzle trail at £14 a child, adults £2, weekends from 28 November and daily 19 to 22 December. It is run by Warrington Disability Partnership and built to be fully accessible, and the children's zoo and playground are right there afterwards.
Brockholes near Preston: £37.90. A grotto by the lake at £18.95 a child, adults free, daily from 28 November to Christmas Eve, with cookie decorating and a craft before a five minute slot and a toy. It also does Breakfast with Santa from 12 to 20 December, children £15.95 and adults £12.95, so £57.80 for four.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach: £39.98. The Christmas Grotto Wonderland is from £19.99 a child with two adults included, daily from 21 November, and adds a ride on Alice in Wonderland and a hot chocolate. It is at the Arena end off Watson Road, not the main gates.
Oswaldtwistle Mills: £40. A 45 minute group grotto with a craft, a singalong with Santa and then a personal visit in family groups, £20 a child with two adults included, weekends from 28 November.
Story Time with Santa at Liverpool Town Hall: £45. From £22.50 a child with one adult free per child ticket, on selected dates from 5 December. Sessions are capped at 20 children, which keeps it calm.
Castaway Play in Congleton: £49.99 for a family of four in November, £59.99 in December. Its Christmas Alpine Retreat is a two and a half hour session with a private grotto visit and a toy, the Grinch, a North Pole post office, then play time in the rest of the centre. From 22 November.
Anderton Boat Lift near Northwich: £50. A 45 minute Santa cruise on the Weaver on 19, 20, 21 and 23 December, adults £10 and children £15. Babies still need a £4 ticket and get no gift.
Magical Malpas: £60, children £20 and adults £10, for a tractor ride, gingerbread decorating and the grotto on December weekends and 23 December. The tractor leaves on time, with or without you.
Hayrack Church Farm near Chester: £69.90, children £24.95 and adults £10, but each child's gift includes a free farm pass worth £7. Booking is by email or phone and tickets are non-refundable.
Santa's Secret Forest near Formby: £72.60, from £18.15 each and everyone over 12 months needs a ticket. It is a light trail through the woods, then Santa in an indoor hub. Allow two hours or more.
Springs Farm in Keswick: £80, children £25 and adults £15, for a tractor tour past the Highland cows and Santa in the cafe, weekends from 5 to 20 December. Only two adults per child fit on the trailer.
The Grotto Manchester, now at the Corn Exchange: £88, children £29.50 and adults £14.50, for a 30 minute walk through themed rooms that ends in Santa's cabin. Every child needs a ticket, babies included, and the queue is indoors.
Honister Slate Mine at the top of Honister Pass runs Santa's Secret Grotto underground on selected dates from 14 November, from £30, finishing with an underground sledge slope. The mine says it sells out every year without exception. Check the pass before you set off.
Cockfields Farm Park in Ashton-under-Lyne is the dearest on the list at full price: £48.95 an adult and £62.45 a child, which is £222.80 for four. For that you get a train ride to the North Pole, an elf village, a build-a-bear, reindeer and a private grotto visit, plus the farm park all day. Early dates are up to 60% off, so if you are going, go early.
The Dunham Barn at Dunham Massey is about £29 for one adult and one child, with extra people paying on the day. It is a private slot of up to six people with free parking. SEA LIFE Blackpool adds a Santa grotto on December weekends and 19 to 24 December for £8.50 a child, but only on top of a normal aquarium ticket for the same day.
Steam first. The East Lancashire Railway runs its Santa Specials from Bury on late November and December weekends and daily 19 to 24 December: an 80 minute steam round trip to Rawtenstall with a brass band and Santa coming down the carriage. Children from £24.50 and adults from £25, so from £99 for four, and the late November weekend is the cheapest. Ribble Steam Railway in Preston does a 55 minute trip on December weekends and 21 and 22 December, at £27.50 a ticket, with a plush toy engine for every child.
In the Lakes, Lakeside and Haverthwaite runs Tinsel Trains on December weekends up to the 20th, priced by the compartment: £125 for four and £30 for each extra. Tickets go on sale at 10am on 4 November, and there is no room on board for pushchairs. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Santa Express goes 40 minutes up the Eskdale valley to a grotto at Dalegarth, and its Santa's Little Helper Express on Fridays 4 and 11 December is a shorter version for pre-schoolers. Threlkeld Quarry near Keswick runs Santa trains on December dates too. None of the three Cumbrian ones had a price up.
On the water: ChesterBoat does an hour on the Dee with Santa on only six sailings, 5, 12 and 19 December, adults £17 and children £19, so £72 for four, with a book chosen for each child's reading age. WWT Martin Mere at Burscough sails children to Santa's Island at £18.50 each, but that is on top of centre admission for everyone and only one adult per child fits on the boat. The National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port pairs a festive canal boat trip with a grotto inside the museum; the ticket covers up to two adults per child and gets you into the museum for the day. It had no price up yet. The Anderton cruise is in the £30 to £60 list above.
Quarry Bank holds neurodivergent-friendly Father Christmas sessions on 11 and 16 December, and a baby and toddler play session with him (£15) on 10, 11, 17 and 18 December. Hayrack Church Farm runs a separate, quieter SEN grotto. Walton Hall is built to be fully accessible from the start. Levens Hall books Father Christmas one child per slot, so it never becomes a conveyor belt. And Ravenglass's Little Helper Express leaves out the museum storytelling and the magician, which suits a pre-schooler who does not do crowds.
These had 2026 dates on their own sites on 25 September but no price: Father Christmas on the Farm at Walby Farm Park near Carlisle, which sells out every year and includes a full day on the farm; Farmer Christmas at Farmer Ted's near Ormskirk, with a 10% early bird; the North Pole Experience at Reddish Vale Farm in Stockport; Father Christmas at the Farm at Tatton Park; Holker's Christmas Grotto at Holker Hall, only five dates and not on sale yet; the Ravenglass and Threlkeld Santa trains; the National Waterways Museum; and the charity-run evening at Ford Park in Ulverston on 5 and 6 December, where the first adult is free. Christmas admission at Levens Hall is £3 a child and £9.50 an adult, and Father Christmas is there at weekends by booking.
Now, for the popular ones. Honister Slate Mine and Walby Farm Park say they sell out every year. The Tinsel Trains at Lakeside and Haverthwaite go on sale at 10am on 4 November. Cockfields Farm Park is up to 60% cheaper on its early dates.

It varies a lot. At Brockholes adults are free, at Quarry Bank and Blackpool Pleasure Beach two adults go free with each child, Walton Hall charges adults £2, and The Grotto Manchester charges adults £14.50 and needs a ticket for every baby too.
A free museum of Macclesfield's silk trade in the old School of Art, with a paid add-on at Paradise Mill, where the Jacquard handlooms still stand where the weavers left them. Children get a Victorian millworker trail in the mill.
Lancashire's only surviving colliery headgear and a 3,300 horsepower steam winding engine at Astley Green, run by volunteers and free to walk round. Afternoons only, four days a week.
A working cotton mill where the looms still clatter and the Apprentice House tells the children's side of the industrial revolution straight. A new Play Hub inside the mill and river walks outside round it off.
The oldest topiary gardens in the world, laid out in the 1690s five miles south of Kendal and still clipped into the same absurd shapes. In child terms, acres of giant green chess pieces to run between.
The reliable default: gardens, a children's zoo, a big playground and plenty of room to run. Pay for parking, nothing else.
A nature reserve with a visitor village that floats on the lake - genuinely floats. Easy flat trails, hides, a good playground and free family crafts in the summer holidays.
The big one. Nickelodeon Land covers the primary ages properly while the Big One and the wooden coasters wait for brave older kids. August queues are real; go in expecting them and it is a great day.
Five themed play worlds in Congleton, including a covered sandy beach with a water splash area, a pirate ship with gold panning, a jungle zip line, pedal go karts and a disco room. One admission price; term-time weekdays are cheaper, but it closes at 3pm on those days.
A Victorian lift that hoists whole canal boats fifty feet in the air, and you can ride it. Genuinely impressive to a small child, with a visitor centre and café on site.
A pick-your-own farm on the Cheshire, Wrexham and Shropshire border that opens for pumpkins in October and for a booked Father Christmas tractor trip in December. October is the bargain: £2 a head for the maize mazes, photo village and patch.
A working farm ten minutes north of Chester where the pens are open, the feed bags cost a pound and the soft play is included in the ticket. No booking, which is half the appeal.
A working family farm under a mile from Keswick town centre, where a tractor trailer takes you out to feed Highland cows and meet the pigs, goats and Herdwicks. Weekend tours only and they must be booked.
A working slate mine at the top of Honister Pass with guided tours deep into the mountain, and via ferrata routes up the crag for the brave. Tours take all ages; the climbing starts at ten.
A big family-run farm park on the Ashton and Oldham border: feed the cows, alpacas and goats, hold the rabbits, then lose an hour on the jumping pillow. Card only, and from October most days are ticketed events.
A solid seafront aquarium with an ocean tunnel and rockpool sessions - the reliable wet-weather hour when the beach plan falls apart.
Real steam trains between Bury, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall, with themed family days all summer - Peppa Pig, fairytale specials, the lot. The day rover means you can hop off for lunch and catch the next one back.
Steam trains along Preston's dockside with a museum shed full of engines, a playground and a tea room all on one ticket that covers all-day travel. A Saturday railway, so check the calendar before you promise anyone a train.
A short, perfectly-formed steam line through the Leven valley that connects with the Windermere boats at Lakeside. Do train plus cruise and you have built the classic Lakes day without a single car park argument.
Miniature steam engines - properly miniature, knee-high to a real train - hauling open carriages seven miles into the fells. Forty minutes of pure delight each way; combine with Muncaster next door.
A long-running quarry museum three miles from Keswick, with a narrow gauge railway ride into the quarry included in the ticket, mineral panning and a yard full of old diggers. Excellent for any child who stops for roadworks.
Half an hour on the Dee from The Groves, past Grosvenor Park and along the Meadows, for £4.50 a child and free under 5s. Exactly as long as a small child finds a boat interesting.
Otters at feeding time, flamingos, pond dipping and a canoe safari through the reeds in season. One of those places that quietly turns a nature-indifferent child into a nature child.
A real working dock kept as a museum: historic narrowboats, locks, indoor galleries, boat trips and a waterways playground. Under 6s free, and the annual pass costs less than two visits.
Cumbria's big family farm park: animal handling, giant jumping pillows, pedal go-karts and an indoor play barn big enough to lose a wet afternoon in. The far-north option when you are up that way.
Built precisely for the under-9s: animal encounters, giant jumping pillows, tractor rides and a big indoor play barn that rescues wet days. Older siblings will tolerate it; little ones adore it.
A proper small farm park tucked into the Tame valley on Stockport's edge: cows, goats, shire horses and alpacas, zip wires outside and a play area under cover for when it rains. Book online, the gate price is higher.
A thousand acres of deer park with a playground, plus a mansion, 50 acres of gardens and a rare-breeds farm bolted on. The trick is knowing the car fee covers the parkland and playground, and everything else is a separate ticket.
A big stately home near Cartmel with 25 acres of gardens, fallow deer grazing towards Morecambe Bay and free entry for under-12s. The parents pay, the children roam; it works best with a picnic.
A charity-run park under Hoad Hill in Ulverston with an inclusive playground, a woodland animal trail, a walled garden and orchard, and the path up to the Sir John Barrow Monument. Free, open daily and busy with family events.
