Water & swimming in Blackpool

Blackpool's water comes in three temperatures. The free one is the beach itself: seven miles of sand with lifeguards on the central stretches all summer, donkeys doing their hundred-and-something-th season, and the patch by Central Pier that stays dry even at high tide. Respect the tide and it is the best-value day in town.

The paid ones are indoors. The Sandcastle across from the Pleasure Beach is the UK's biggest indoor waterpark, kept at 29 degrees whatever the Irish Sea is doing, with evening Last Splash sessions as the cheap way in. Sea Life on the Promenade is the calm, dry-ish alternative: the ocean tunnel and the rockpool sessions fill the gap between beach mornings, and it heaves the moment it rains, so time it accordingly.
