Cheshire is where the big-ticket days live: Chester Zoo, BeWILDerwood, Gulliver's World, all worth the money and all a proper spend. The quieter half of the county is the bargain. Walton Hall has a free children's zoo and one of the best playgrounds in the borough, Delamere Forest costs nothing beyond parking, and Lymm Dam is a free walk that feels further from a motorway than it is. The Ice Cream Farm near Chester costs a couple of pounds to walk in and then charges by the go, which is a trap, but a pleasant one.
Rain does not have to mean soft play. Catalyst in Widnes does proper hands-on science under one roof, Blue Planet at Ellesmere Port fills a wet afternoon, and Jodrell Bank is worth the ticket the first time the Lovell telescope moves. Our approach to days out in Cheshire is to alternate: one paid big day, then two or three free ones. Nobody notices the difference by bedtime.

A free wolf-spotting activity round the wonkiest Tudor house in England: the wolves have wandered off and the children have to find them. Cross the moat, count the wolves, and let the hall's crooked floors do the entertaining. Normal admission applies.
A Halloween storybook trail through the woods round the lakes at Culcheth, billed as spooky, not scary, and made for families and 'little adventurers': help Victor the Skeleton and Luna the Witch break the Skeleton King's curse. Pram and wheelchair friendly. Early bird tickets are £2 off, infants need a ticket too, parking is £5 booked ahead, and the cheaper early dusk slots from 5.20pm suit small children best.
The treehouses, zip wires and wobbly bridges as normal, plus Twig or Treating with the characters, a spooky disco, face stencils and a Glowing Light Trail as the sun goes down. Open until 6pm so the light trail is the finale. A limited number of tickets carry 25% off on every date, so the first to book pay least.
An evening walk through 15 acres of woodland lit with glowing pumpkins, with live characters along the way, now in its tenth year. Billed as gentle thrills rather than frights, with marshmallow toasting at fire pits and real owls to meet. Most families spend an hour and a half to two hours; you pick an entry time when you book.
Halloween at the theme park built for the under 12s: a fancy dress street parade, Gilly's Spooky Dance Party, the Monster Mansion Mine and character meet and greets on top of the usual rides. Costumes and colour rather than jump scares, which is the right way round at that age.
An interactive outdoor art installation for half term: step through a series of mysterious doorways to find local folklore, old traditions and ghost stories. The listing gives no separate price, so assume normal Lyme admission until the National Trust says otherwise.

A red sandstone ridge with pine and beech woods, old mine workings and views to the Peak District. The Wizard's Wander is a 1 mile easy loop, there is a tea room by the car park, and walking is free. Parking is not.
A Victorian lift built to hoist canal boats fifty feet between the Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. The lift itself is closed for repairs through 2026, with reopening planned for the 2027 season, but the free visitor centre, the play area and hour-long river cruises from its foot are all running.
A flooded sand quarry ten minutes' walk from Congleton town centre, now fourteen hectares of water, woodland and wildflower meadow with a flat mile long path round it. There is no playground.
A free adventure playground in Blacon, going for over 50 years, with a zip wire, a fort and an 8ft slide, plus a small farm of donkeys, goats and sheep. No food on site, so take a picnic and wellies.
A shopping village in the Delamere woods with free entry, free parking and a genuinely good free adventure playground, plus a long menu of pay-as-you-go extras from crazy golf to falconry.
Free-entry hill farm on the A54 above Wildboarclough, with ice cream made from its own Peak District milk, a tea room and nature trails through meadow and woodland. Picnics are banned, which is how entry stays free.
Fifty odd acres of birch and oak wrapped round a fifteen acre lake, out between Congleton and Holmes Chapel. Give the children the permanent orienteering map and it stops being a walk.
Nine hectares of Green Flag park in the middle of Frodsham, with two trails that give a walk a point: a story sculpture trail following Matilda the bee, and a tree trail of nineteen trees.
Nearly a thousand years of history in the middle of Chester, free to walk into for most of the year and dry when the Walls are not. The tower tour costs extra, and its age rules only show up in the booking system.
Two miles of Roman, Saxon and medieval wall right round the city centre, free and always there, and the most complete circuit in Britain. Children like being up high; parents like that you can drop off at any gate for a cake.
The largest Roman amphitheatre uncovered in Britain, sitting in the open just outside the city walls. Only about half of it has been dug out and the rest is still under the buildings behind.
The free outdoor paddling pool is the summer draw, run for under elevens with an attendant always on duty. The rest is twenty five acres of Victorian park along the River Dane.
